Sustainability and efficiency being at the heart of African countries strategies , Morocco will host in 2019, the first edition of Solar DecathlonAfrica.
Solar Decathlon is an international academic competition organized by the US Department of Energy (DOE) that brings together thousands of students from all over the world. The teams are challenged to design and build sustainable homes with high energy performance and respectful of the environment. Each edition highlights the most important aspects on which country is promoting sustainable construction. The competition take place in a unique site where houses are exposed to public as well as to a jury of experts.
Organized in the United States every 2 years since its creation in 2002, the competition was first exported to Europe, specifically Spain in 2010, then China with the Beijing edition in 2013, then Latin America in Colombia in 2015 and finally first MENA edition is planned in 2018 in Dubai.
The call for expressions of interest will be launched in early 2017. During two years, universities from the world will work in pairs with African universities for the design of houses, whilst enhancing all over know-how and local African materials. The houses will be build within the GREEN AND SMART BUILDING PARK of the Green City of Benguerir, where they will be exhibited and tested for a year.
